Historically, education has largely been used for political gains and to strengthen positions of power. Similarly, ruling elites in Pakistan achieve their political interests by using education as a tool. This study problematised the religious content in the secondary school science textbooks of the national curriculum. This was illustrated in the context of the post-conflict scenario of 11 September 2001 (9/11) in the newly merged tribal districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. A thematic analysis of the content of the science textbooks (physics and biology) was used to develop the findings of this study. This was supported by field data gathered from students' experiences and interactions with the sample textbooks. By incorporating Foucault's concept of the 'regime of truth' and Talbani's conceptualisation of Islamisation, the study found the use of the Qur'anic verses in the sampled textbooks to be influential 'technologies of power and self' to Islamise science and scientify Islam to prove it as a scientific religion. In addition, it makes education increasingly irrelevant to changing socio-economic realities and aspirations among students. CONTRIBUTION: The study can contribute both to theory and practice. By Islamising science education and instilling obscurantism in textbooks for schools, there is a substantial sociopolitical impact, as well as a negative impact on students' critical thinking skills. The policymakers and actors in the Pakistani education system should therefore pay close attention to this issue. Unless the current educational system is changed, a number of generations will experience stunted growth that will be nearly impossible to reverse in the future.

Abstract: Objective: To determine the exposure to aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) in southern Mexico and the presence of the aflatoxin signature mutation in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) tissue from patients from a cancer referral center. Materials and methods: We estimated the prevalence and distribution of AFB1 in a representative sample of 100 women and men from Chiapas using the National Health and Nutrition Survey 2018-19. We also examined the presence of the aflatoxin signature mutation in codon 249 (R249S), and other relevant mutations of the TP53 gene in HCC tissue blocks from 24 women and 26 men treated in a national cancer referral center. Results: The prevalence of AFB1 in serum samples was 85.5% (95%CI 72.1-93.1) and the median AFB1 was 0.117 pg/µL (IQR, 0.050-0.350). We detected TP53 R249S in three of the 50 HCCs (6.0%) and observed four other G>T transversions potentially induced by AFB1. Conclusion: Our analysis provides evidence that AFB1 may have a relevant role on HCC etiology in Mexico.

Resumen: Objetivo: Determinar la exposición a aflatoxina_B1 (AFB1) en el sur de México y la presencia de la mutación característica de AFB1 en tejido de carcinoma hepatocelular (CHC) de pacientes de un centro oncológico. Material y métodos: Se estimó la prevalencia y distribución de AFB1 en una muestra representativa de 100 mujeres y hombres de Chiapas a partir de la Encuesta Nacional de Salud y Nutrición 2018-19. También se observó la presencia de la mutación característica de AFB1 en el codón 249 (R249S), y otras mutaciones relevantes del gen TP53 en bloques de tejido de CHC de 24 mujeres y 26 hombres estudiados en un centro de referencia nacional de oncología. Resultados: La prevalencia de AFB1 en las muestras de suero fue de 85.5% (IC95% 72.1-93.1) y la mediana de la concentración 0.117 pg/µL (IQR, 0.050-0.350). Se detectó TP53 R249S en tres de 50 casos de CHC (6.0%) y se observaron cuatro transversiones G>T potencialmente inducidas por AFB1. Conclusión: El presente análisis proporciona evidencia de que la AFB1 puede tener un papel relevante en la etiología del CHC en México.

Abstract It has been extensively reported that long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) were closely associated with multiple malignancies. The aim of our study was to investigate the effects and mechanism of lncRNA POU6F2-AS1 in lung adenocarcinoma (LADC).The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) datasets provided us the information of LADC clinical samples. High-regulation of POU6F2-AS1 was presented in LADC tissues compared with adjacent normal tissues, which was correlated with poor outcome of LADC patients. Functional experiments in Calu-3 and NCI-H460 cells showed that POU6F2-AS1 significantly promoted LADC cell proliferation, colony formation, invasion and migration. Moreover, through online prediction, luciferase reporter assay and Pearson’s correlation analysis, we found that POU6F2-AS1 may act as a competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) of miR-34c-5p and facilitated the expression of potassium voltage-gated channel subfamily J member 4 (KCNJ4). The promoting effect of cell aggressiveness induced by POU6F2-AS1 was enhanced by KCNJ4, whilst was abrogated due to the overexpression of miR-34c-5p. Collectively, POU6F2-AS1 might function as a ceRNA through sponging miR-34c-5p to high-regulate KCNJ4 in LADC, which indicates that POU6F2-AS1 might be a promising therapeutic target with significant prognostic value for LADC treatment.

Abstract Neurosyphilis (NS) is a neurological disorder caused by Treponema pallidum subspecies pallidum (T. pallidum), but how T. pallidum attach to and cross the blood−brain barrier (BBB) and how BBB response to this bacteria remain unclear. To explore how the human brain microvascular endothelial cells (HBMECs) response to T. pallidum, the Agilent SurePrint G3 Human Gene Expression 8×60K microarray was used. The results revealed that 249 genes were differentially expressed in HBMECs infected with T. pallidum. In particular, genes encoding proteins involved in bacterial adhesion, endothelial cell activation and immune response were regulated by T. pallidum. Furthermore, Gene Ontology (GO) enrichment analysis and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analysis were performed to determine the biological functions of differentially expressed genes. In summary, T. pallidum changes the gene expression profile in HBMECs, and differentially expressed genes are associated with widespread biological and pathophysiological functions. Above all, this is the first paper reporting the effects of T. pallidum on HBMECs. These data develop a new platform for further molecular experiments on the pathogenesis of NS.

Manganese vanadate microtubes have been synthesized by a facile polyvinyl pyrrolidone-assisted hydrothermal route. X-ray diffraction pattern confirms that the microtubes are composed of monoclinic MnV2O6, tetragonal V2O5 and orthorhombic MnO2 phases. The outer diameter and inner diameter of the microtubes are about 300 nm-3 µm and 200 nm-1 µm, respectively. The tube wall thickness of the microtubes is about 50 nm-1 µm. The possible formation process of the manganese vanadate microtubes has been proposed as a polyvinyl pyrrolidone-assisted growth mechanism.

A novel one-dimensional metal-isonicotinato inorganic-organic hybrid complex ]GD(C6N0(2)H5)3(H(2)0)2](2N)•(NH(5)0(2))(NZNCL5)(2NZNCL4)•(2NH(2)0) (1) has been successfully synthesized via hydrothermal reaction and structurally characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Complex 1 is characteristic of a novel one-dimensional polycationic chain-like structure and unprecedented ZnCl5³~species. Optical absorption spectra of 1 reveal the presence of an optical gap of 3.35 eV. Photoluminescent investigation reveáis that the title complex displays a strong blue-light fluorescent emission band.

Equilibrium constant and mass transfer parameters are needed for the study of amino acid separation in any process involving adsorption in fixed beds. The adsorption constants, effective diffusion coefficients, and axial dispersion coefficients for two amino acids, L-phenylalanine (Phe) and L-tyrosine (Tyr), are determined from a series of pulse tests in a fixed bed packed with PVP (poly-4-vinylpyridine) resin. Total bed voidage at different flow rates is estimated from NaCl pulse test data. The effective pore diffusivities of Phe, Tyr, and NaCl are estimated from moment analysis of pulse data. A detailed rate model is then solved numerically and adsorption constants, effective diffusion coefficients, axial dispersion coefficients are determined by moment analysis and compared with the pulse data. The advantage of this method is that the effective intraparticle diffusivities can be determined without the influence of extracolumn dispersion or intracolumn axial dispersion effects.
